FLIGHT ROULETTE

The same rules as the app's Rules screen.

How to play

  • Daily Spin. Take at most one flight per day of your run. A run lasts 7 days unless the season says otherwise. Days are counted in 24-hour blocks from the moment your run starts.
  • Non-Stop. Chain flights against the clock (48 or 72 hours, set by the season). After each landing you get flights leaving 2.5 to 8 hours later, or at least 3.5 hours later if the next flight crosses a border. If nothing leaves in that window you see the next departures instead, and waiting uses up your clock.
  • Start where you are. Your run starts from an airport you can actually get to. The app lists the airports near you first, nearest first, with how far each is and how long it takes to get there. Standing at an airport? It is picked for you.

Where you fly from

  • Airports with scheduled flights. Only airports with scheduled passenger flights are offered: no private airfields.
  • Daily Spin: anywhere you can get to in time. You have a day to travel, so each flight can leave from any airport you can reach before it departs: the straight-line distance at about 80 km/h, plus 2 hours at the airport, up to 600 km away, by land: never across the sea unless a bridge or tunnel gets you there (the Channel Tunnel, the Øresund Bridge). The spin shows flights from all of them, grouped by airport, with the travel time to each. Getting to the airport never counts towards your distance: only flights score.
  • Non-Stop: from where you landed. Every flight after the first leaves from the airport you landed at.
  • Your start airport. You can change it until you lock in your first flight. After that it is fixed; to start somewhere else, end the run and start a new one.
  • Check in at the airport. When you get to the airport, check in in the app. Your phone's location (within 5 km of the airport, before an hour after departure) is the evidence you got there.
  • No location?. You can still play: pick your airport by hand each time, or use your home airport. Flights without a check-in at the airport are checked by a person instead of verifying automatically.

How scoring works

  • Distance flown. Your score is the straight-line (great-circle) distance between each departure and arrival airport, added up. We calculate it from airport coordinates; distances typed in or printed on bookings are never used.
  • Only verified flights count. A flight shows as Pending until its proof is checked. Verified flights count towards your score.
  • Leaderboards. Each season has separate leaderboards for each mode and budget tier. Filter by everyone, your country, your start airport or your friends.

Your budget

  • Four tiers. Backpacker $50, Drifter $100, Explorer $250, Globetrotter $500. Budgets are set in US dollars and shown in your currency at the exchange rate locked when your run starts.
  • What counts. Everything on your booking confirmation: the fare, taxes, bags, seat selection and booking fees.
  • What doesn't count. Accommodation, food and drink, and trains, buses or taxis. Spend what you like on those.

Get-home reserve

  • Always keep a way home. Before your run starts you declare a get-home reserve: money set aside to get you home from wherever you end up. It is not part of your game budget and is never deducted. Make sure it covers a flight home from far away.

The spin

  • Random, not cheapest. A spin picks a flight at random from every flight that fits your remaining budget and your filters (no early departures, direct only, cabin bag included). You can also pick a flight yourself.
  • You book it. We show you where to book. We never sell tickets or take payments.

What counts as proof

  • Boarding pass scan. Scan the barcode on your boarding pass in the app. It is read on your phone and the image is thrown away straight after.
  • Booking confirmation. Upload a screenshot, photo or PDF of your booking confirmation. We read the total for you; you can edit it, but edited totals are checked by a person.
  • Airport check-in. Check in at the departure airport in the app before you fly. Daily Spin needs it for every flight; Non-Stop for the first (after that you leave from where you landed). Without it, a person checks the flight.
  • Destination photo. Take a photo in the app when you arrive. It must be taken at your destination.
  • Delays. If a delayed flight makes you miss your next booking, you can claim that booking back with proof of the delay. A person reviews every claim.

Privacy

  • Never post your boarding pass. The barcode holds your booking reference, which someone could use to change or cancel your trip. Never share a photo of it.
  • Your booking reference stays on your phone. We never store or send your booking reference. Your phone turns it into a one-way code, used only to stop the same boarding pass being used twice. Booking references are blacked out of uploaded confirmations before they are stored.
  • What is public. Your public run page shows your route, distances, fares and destination photos. Never your boarding pass, booking or booking reference.
  • Where you are now stays private for a while. Anywhere public (the live feed, the ticker, the leaderboard, maps and your public pages), a city you have just landed in is only named once you fly on, or 6 hours after landing. A flight in the air never shows where it is going.
  • Free Roam trips are private. A Free Roam trip is yours alone unless you make it public. A public trip shows only stops you have already reached, under the same 6-hour rule, and is never ranked.

Today's spin and the Dare

  • Today's spin: where could $50 take you today?. Once a day, pick a budget ($50, $100, $250, $500 or your own) and the board shows the furthest real flight you could take in the next 24 hours from an airport you can get to (or your home airport without location), plus a few more, with Book this flight. One reveal a day; reveal on days in a row for a streak. It's outside the game: no season, no leaderboard.
  • The Dare. Set a time window (today, this weekend or a date), a price cap and where you could leave from (the airports in reach, unless you pick). One roll picks one flight, and every flight that fits has exactly the same chance: not the cheapest first. Only flights you can get to in time and enter with your passport count. After a roll there is no other for 24 hours.
  • Taking a Dare. Accept it and it becomes your booked flight, with Book this flight. Scan your boarding pass (in your name, as for a run) and, once the flight has left, you earn XP and a "Dared and went" badge, with a card to share. Back out and it goes down as "Chickened out", which only you can see.
  • Passports. Add the passports you hold in Profile. The Dare and Today's spin leave out countries where they need a visa or an online authorisation (like ESTA or an ETA) before you travel. You are still responsible for checking entry rules before you book.

XP and levels

  • XP is for things that are checked. Verified flights (1 XP per 10 km, once the boarding pass is verified), finishing a run (250), completing a Free Roam trip (100), taking a Dare (300 plus its distance), Today's spin (10 a day, up to 70 for a 7-day streak), and reactions other players give your photos (2 each, up to 20 a day). XP can never be bought.
  • Levels and ranks. Levels come with aviation ranks: Passenger, Frequent Flyer, First Officer, Captain, Senior Captain, Chief Pilot and Sky Legend. Your level shows on your profile and next to your name in feeds and boards.
  • Never part of the leaderboard. XP and levels are separate from the season. Leaderboards stay distance on budget only.
  • Unlocks are for looks and space. Levels unlock map pin icons for your photos and tips, more photos per stop (10, 15, 20, 25) and longer captions, route line styles and colours, board colour themes, profile frames and flap sounds. Never anything that helps you win.

Passports, visas and safety

  • You are responsible for entry rules. Check passport validity, visas and entry requirements before you book each flight. Do not book a flight you cannot legally take.
  • No prize is worth a risk. Flight Roulette is a travel challenge with no gambling or wagering. Skip any flight that does not feel safe.

Counts against your budget: fare, taxes and airport charges, bags, seat selection, booking fees. Never counts: accommodation, food and drink, trains, buses and taxis, your get-home reserve.
